FARM TO SCHOOL
Abernethy Elementary - with the help of Ecotrust, Injury Free Coalition for Kids, and Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services - operates a "Farm to School" program boasting a Scratch Kitchen where made-from-scratch meals are cooked on site using fresh ingredients; an outdoor garden where students participate in growing plants; and a classroom space where the garden and Scratch Kitchen are used as the centerpiece for practical, hands-on classroom science, math, language, history and art lessons. The program is quickly gaining recognition, inspiring change and innovation in the school food environment.
