PORTLAND NEIGHBORHOODS | ORIENTATION

The Layout

Downtown Southeast Southwest Northeast North Northwest Portland neighborhoods are distinctive from their counterparts in other cities of similar size. The city’s strong, active neighborhood associations are concerned with livability and community, a concern that manifests itself in projects such as the community gardens that dot the landscape with color in the spring and community improvement initiatives such as the Division Green Street/Main Street Project, which aims to transform SE Division Street into a pedestrian and alternative transportation-friendly thoroughfare.

Portland neighborhoods are also unique in offering great amenities within walking distance. Even at the outermost reaches of the city, such as Southwest Portland’s Multnomah neighborhood, you’ll find charming districts such as Multnomah Village, which is filled with shops, restaurants and neighborhood hangouts.

Portland neighborhoods exude a neighborly vibe that is all too uncommon in many American cities. With a focus on community and livability Portland neighborhoods offer an alternative to suburban developments where the car is the most familiar feature of everyday life. Though densely populated the city’s neighborhoods offer tranquil, tree-lined streets that are safe for kids.
